From Our Phuket Kitchen

Fresh turmeric is one of those ingredients we use often in our Phuket kitchen studio. It stains the chopping board, your fingers, your apron, and possibly your soul - but it is worth every golden stain!

These turmeric wellness shots came from our love of simple daily kitchen rituals. Nothing complicated, nothing faddy, and no expensive bottled shots needed. Just real ingredients blended into something bright, sharp and energising.

Fresh turmeric, ginger, citrus and carrot make a powerful flavour combination. The turmeric brings earthiness, the ginger adds heat, the citrus gives freshness, and the carrot softens everything with natural sweetness.

We like to make a small batch at the start of the week and keep it in the fridge. One little shot in the morning is a quick way to wake up the palate and bring a bit of golden sunshine into the day.

What Are Turmeric Wellness Shots?

Turmeric wellness shots are small, concentrated drinks made with fresh turmeric, ginger, citrus and other nourishing ingredients. They are usually served in small portions and enjoyed as part of a morning routine or alongside a balanced diet.

This recipe combines fresh turmeric root, ginger, orange, lemon, carrot, black pepper, olive oil and maple syrup. The result is bright, fiery, earthy and refreshing, with natural sweetness from the carrot and orange.

Rather than treating these shots as a quick fix, we like to think of them as a simple wholefood ritual. They are a convenient way to enjoy more colourful plant ingredients in a fresh, homemade drink.

  • Fresh and fiery: Ginger, lemon and turmeric bring a proper kick.

Key Ingredients for Turmeric Wellness Shots

Turmeric

Fresh turmeric root is the golden star of these wellness shots. It has an earthy, slightly bitter flavour and contains curcumin, a natural plant compound widely studied for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin is not easily absorbed on its own, which is why this recipe combines turmeric with black pepper and a little healthy fat.

Ginger

Fresh ginger brings heat, freshness and a lively kick to these turmeric wellness shots. It has a long history of use in traditional cooking and herbal remedies, especially for digestion and nausea. In this recipe, ginger balances the earthy turmeric and gives the shot its fiery finish.

Black Pepper

Black pepper may seem like a small ingredient, but it plays an important role. It contains piperine, a natural compound that can significantly improve the absorption of curcumin from turmeric. This is why turmeric and black pepper are often paired together in wellness drinks, curries and golden milk. Johns Hopkins also notes that piperine, when combined with curcumin, has been shown to increase bioavailability by 2,000%.

Olive Oil

A small amount of olive oil helps round out the flavour and supports the absorption of curcumin. Curcumin is fat-soluble, so pairing turmeric with a little healthy fat can help the body absorb it more effectively. Harvard Health also notes that consuming turmeric with fats such as oils can increase curcumin absorption in the digestive tract.

Maple Syrup or Honey

A little natural sweetener helps soften the sharpness of the turmeric, ginger and lemon. For a fully plant-based turmeric wellness shot, use maple syrup or coconut syrup. Honey can also be used if you are not following a vegan diet.

Citrus Fruits

Orange and lemon bring brightness, acidity and natural sweetness to these turmeric wellness shots. They also add vitamin C, a key nutrient that contributes to normal immune function and helps protect cells from oxidative stress. Most importantly from a chef's point of view, citrus makes the shot taste fresh and balanced instead of muddy and medicinal.

How to Store Turmeric Wellness Shots

  • Store the turmeric shots in clean glass bottles or jars in the fridge for up to 7 days. Shake well before serving, as natural separation will happen.
  • You can also freeze the mixture in large ice cube trays. Defrost one cube overnight in the fridge when needed.
  • For the freshest flavour, keep the bottles sealed and refrigerated. Do not drink if the mixture smells fermented, sour in a spoiled way, fizzy, or unpleasant.

What to Serve With Turmeric Wellness Shots

These shots are best served chilled in the morning or before breakfast. Try them with:

  • Overnight oats
  • Smoothie bowls
  • Fresh fruit
  • Chia pudding
  • Healthy breakfast recipes

A Quick Wellness Note

These turmeric wellness shots are a fresh, wholefood drink, not a medical treatment. Enjoy them as part of a balanced diet. If you are pregnant, taking blood-thinning medication, managing gallbladder issues, liver conditions, or any ongoing medical concern, check with a qualified healthcare professional before taking concentrated turmeric regularly.

Turmeric contains curcumin, a natural plant compound widely studied for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. You can learn more about the potential benefits of turmeric in this helpful guide from Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make turmeric wellness shots without a juicer?

Yes. This recipe is made in a blender with filtered water. You can drink it as it is for more fibre, or strain it for a smoother shot.

Can I use turmeric powder instead of fresh turmeric root?

Yes, but fresh turmeric gives the best flavour and colour. If using turmeric powder, start with a small amount because it is more concentrated and can taste bitter.

How long do turmeric wellness shots last?

They will keep in the fridge for up to 7 days in clean sealed bottles. Shake well before serving.

Can I freeze turmeric shots?

Yes. Freeze the mixture in large ice cube trays, then defrost one portion overnight in the fridge.

Why add black pepper to turmeric shots?

Black pepper contains piperine, which may help increase the absorption of curcumin, the main active compound in turmeric.

Why add olive oil?

Curcumin is fat-soluble, so adding a small amount of healthy fat such as olive oil may help support absorption.

Are turmeric wellness shots vegan?

They are vegan if you use maple syrup or coconut syrup instead of honey.

How much should I drink?

One small shot per day is enough for most people. More is not always better - this is wellness, not a turmeric-drinking competition!
