Earth day recipes for 365 days of the year

23rd April 2021 by Jamie Raftery Leave a Comment

Every day is Earth Day. The food and drinks we consume impact the Earth more than anything else we do. By making more informed decisions on what to eat we can positively contribute to mother Earth rather than deplete her resources even more.

Here are my top 10 Earth Day Recipes with Carbon Footprint Label.

How can we eat more sustainably and eco-friendly?

In this post, I will introduce 10 of my signature recipes along with their Carbon Footprint Rating. I am one of the first recipe bloggers in the world to include The Fair Daily Food Emissions Label in my recipes.

In 2015 it became European law to display allergens on food and drinks sold for human consumption. Calories and macro calculations are commonplace on food and drinks nowadays, but what about the carbon footprint labels of the food we consume?

    Carbon footprint food labels

This is a feature I've dreamt of for years. Imagine reading a menu at a restaurant with carbon footprint labels or sustainability ratings displayed on each dish?

How would this influence your menu choice? Would you still go for the tuna tartar, imported beef, avocado on toast, or even chocolate tart?

I believe carbon footprint food labeling will soon become common practice as consumers request this transparency. As chefs, I believe we have a responsibility to lead by example and set trends while positively influencing our guests' food choices.

Eco-friendly and sustainable recipes are the future. It's time to embrace this further while working towards localizing our food systems.

    local-seasonal-food

Local and seasonal are cliché terms thrown out all too easily. What does local and seasonal actually mean and how far are chefs willing to go?

Now more than ever we need to support local growers, farmers, and suppliers. Menus have to be creatively adapted to utilize what's in season and available.

I appreciate the fact that some regions are challenged more than others in regards to sourcing seasonal ingredients, but we must strive for offsetting the impact of imported ingredients with what we can source and grow locally.

As a professional chef, I know where all the challenges are. The first step is to approach the food wastage, sustainability, and carbon footprint tasks with an open mind for positive change within your team.

How do I reduce my carbon footprint from food?

The first step to reducing your carbon footprint from food is understanding what are the low-carbon foods. A great way to do this is by using My Emissions daily food carbon footprint calculator.

Utilizing the fair daily emissions value, the results show you the carbon emissions from your food, which will help you maintain a more sustainable diet.
